If you have spent any time with me in the last couple of years, you know that climbing in Tafraout in exotic Morocco is pretty much my favorite thing to do in the whole wide world! This is one of the world’s best kept multi-pitch trad climbing secrets! It’s like calling ahead to your favorite, most beautiful climbing area, or national park, and asking that they clear the area so you and your climbing pals can come and have the place all to yourself for a couple of days while you tackle your growing tick list. And trips there just got a lot lighter!

Steve Broadbent and the Oxford Alpine Club recently released their pocket guides for the area and I couldn’t be happier. Just a couple of weeks ago, I was guiding two friendly clients in Tizgut Gorge near Tafraout and Ksar Rock in Afantinzar on the North Side of Jebel el Kest (both highly recommended areas). My back pack was significantly lighter as I was able to stash the corresponding volume in the front pocket and take it with me up multi-pitch classics. The spiral binding is great too as I kept the book open to the route I was climbing and was able to quickly reference it throughout the day. Don’t get me wrong, the older 2 volume set was great too and there are thousands of routes to choose from with detailed information. That info is still found in the pocket guides and still contains helpful pictures, clever charts and maps. These three little guidebooks are a must purchase before your winter climbing trip to Tafraout to soak up some much needed sun on fantastic rock. I highly recommend them and can easily give two thumbs up while still holding all three books!
